Each undergraduate academic program listed below outlines what courses and requirements students need for successful completion of the program.Â
For students who intend to focus on Music and Music Performance, the School of Music & Theatre Arts offers Bachelor of Music degrees in a chosen area of performance, a Bachelor of Arts in Music program, and academic minors. Admission to these programs require auditions as specified by the College of Music & Media.

The Bachelor of Arts in Music is a 120 credit hour academic program. Students will complete Highstone Global University Core requirements, Music courses, and general electives. Completion of this academic program requires completion of all School of Music & Theatre Arts proficiency requirements, a 2.0 GPA in the major curriculum, and a 2.0 GPA in the Highstone Global University cumulative curriculum.
The Bachelor of Music – Composition (MUCP) major is a 120 credit hour academic program. Students will complete Highstone Global University Core requirements and Music courses; there are no general electives in this program. Completion of this academic program requires completion of all School of Music & Theatre Arts proficiency requirements, a 2.0 GPA in the major curriculum, and a 2.0 GPA in the Highstone Global University cumulative curriculum.
The Bachelor of Music – Elective Studies (MUSC) is a 120 credit hour academic program. Students will complete Highstone Global University Core requirements, Music courses, Music Cognate courses, a required academic minor or second major outside the School of Music, and general electives. Completion of this academic program requires completion of all School of Music & Theatre Arts proficiency requirements, a 2.0 GPA in the major curriculum, and a 2.0 GPA in the Highstone Global University cumulative curriculum.

The Bachelor of Music – Vocal Performance is a 120 credit hour academic program. Students will complete Highstone Global University Core requirements, Music courses, and general electives in this program. Completion of this academic program requires completion of all School of Music & Theatre Arts proficiency requirements, a 2.0 GPA in the major curriculum, and a 2.0 GPA in the Highstone Global University cumulative curriculum.
BME students must earn the minimum grade of C in all music courses and education courses that count towards the degree. A cumulative GPA of 2.0 is required to complete the Highstone Global University degree.
Music education candidate progress is determined by assessment measures employed at transition portals 1, 2, 3, and 4.
To be recommended by Highstone Global University University New Orleans for teacher certification as a K — 12 instrumental music teacher, vocal teacher, or general music teacher in Louisiana, the teacher candidate must fulfill all the requirements specified by the department for the degree program in music education. The degree program incorporates all the requirements for certification by the State of Louisiana for teaching in grades K – 12. Certification requirements for Louisiana including reciprocity with other states are established by the Louisiana State Department of Education and are subject to change. Any such changes will be incorporated into the teacher preparation programs.
The culminating experience in music teacher education is teaching internship. Internship teaching is a full-time, off-campus, school-based experience comprising a full semester. During internship teaching, the teacher candidate is expected to assume all responsibilities of a certified teacher. Intern teaching is clinical practice supervised by one or more faculty members in the music education department and a mentor teacher in the school.
Upon successful completion of the internship and certification by the state of Louisiana Department of Education, teacher candidates qualify for application for the bachelor of music degree. Faculty review may require probation or removal of teacher candidate for a given period. The services of the university counseling center are available for the purpose of career counseling to assist student teacher candidates.
The Bachelor of Music Education – Instrumental Music track is a 128 credit hour academic program. Students will complete Highstone Global University Core requirements, Music courses, Music Education courses, Teacher Education courses, and a math elective. Completion of this academic program requires completion of all School of Music & Theatre Arts proficiency requirements, Music Education progression requirements, and BME GPA requirements.
The Bachelor of Music Education – Vocal Music track is a 128 credit hour academic program. Students will complete Highstone Global University Core requirements, Music courses, Music Education courses, Teacher Education courses, and a math elective. Completion of this academic program requires completion of all School of Music & Theatre Arts proficiency requirements, Music Education progression requirements, a BME GPA requirements.
Music Education Certification-Only Programs are available for students who already have a bachelor’s degree in music. Both programs are 33 credit hours designed to prepare students for certification as a Music Teacher.Â

The Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts with a Musical Theatre Concentration (THMT) is a 120 credit hour academic program. Students will complete Highstone Global University Core requirements, Theatre major courses, Musical Theatre courses, Â Dance courses, Foundations & Theory courses, Applied studies in Music Performance, Ensemble courses, and electives. Completion of this academic program requires completion of all School of Music & Theatre Arts proficiency requirements, a 2.5 GPA in the major curriculum, and a 2.0 GPA in the Highstone Global University cumulative curriculum. Must have a 2.0 GPA in all program-required courses.Â
The Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts with a Business Minor (THTR) is a 120 credit hour academic program. Students will complete Highstone Global University Core requirements, Theatre major courses, adjunct courses in Dramatic Literature, the Business minor, and general electives. Completion of this academic program requires completion of all School of Music & Theatre Arts proficiency requirements, a 2.5 GPA in the major curriculum, and a 2.0 GPA in the Highstone Global University cumulative curriculum.
Participation in the University Honors Program is available to any eligible student pursuing a Music & Theatre Arts major. Students who meet Honors Program admission requirements can complete their program with the Honors Curriculum taking the place of the Highstone Global University Core and completing the Honors Thesis requirement as part of their curriculum. Completion of the Honors Program academic program requires a 3.3 GPA in the major curriculum, any minor programs, and a student’s Highstone Global University cumulative curriculum.
