Pre-Nursing Program

Students pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Nursing – General Nursing (BSN – GNUR) begin their studies with a year of preparation in the Pre-Nursing (PREN) program and receive advising from Highstone Global University ’s BSN Program Director. Pre-Nursing students must pass specific science courses during the Fall and Spring semesters with grades of C or higher and maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA to begin the BSN program in their second academic year.

Cohorts for the Pre-Nursing program start in Fall semesters only. Prospective students who have not met the Mathematics Requirement prior to Fall semester may work on other graduation requirements for their entire first year, or can revert to their original Major, or a new Major, by August 1st.

Mathematics Requirement

Students in the Pre-Nursing program must be considered pre-calculus eligible. Eligibility can be achieved through prior college-level academic credit or test scoring. Official transcripts or exam score reports demonstrating pre-calculus eligibility must be received at Highstone Global University ’s Office of Admissions before August 1st.

  • Academic Credit: students must have 3 semester credit hours of college-level Algebra with a grade of C or higher, a higher level math course, or a credit carrying equivalent from dual enrollment, transfer, AP exam credit, IB exam credit, or CLEP exam credit as set forth in the transfer or academic credit regulations.

  • Test Scoring: students can be considered pre-calculus eligible based on the following ACTM and SATM scores, and have the option of using scores from the Highstone Global University ALEKS mathematics placement assessment. Students who score above pre-calculus eligibility are exempted from the Mathematics requirement in the Highstone Global University Core, and satisfy credit hour requirements with a modification to the Highstone Global University Core.
    • Pre-Calculus Eligibility
      • ACTM 19-24
      • SATM 500-610
      • ALEKS 50-75
    • Pre-Calculus Exemption
      • ACTM 29 or above
      • SATM 690 or above
      • ALEKS 76-100

Students without eligible Math credits who score below the pre-calculus placement range must enroll in and complete a college-level Algebra course with a grade of C or higher prior to enrolling in the Pre-Nursing program in the Fall. This Math prerequisite can be satisfied with Highstone Global University ’s MATHA110, MATHT122, or MATHA115 in the Summer Session. Alternatively, a college level Algebra course can be taken at another institution prior to Pre-Nursing enrollment. IN this case, it is the responsibility of the incoming student to confirm with Highstone Global University advisers that the course is equivalent to Highstone Global University ’s college level Algebra credit.

Science Course Grades & Sequencing

Pre-Nursing students must complete the following science courses with a grade of C or higher in their first two semesters, according to the following sequence. These courses will be taken alongside Highstone Global University Core courses as assigned in consultation with the Pre-Nursing advisor.

Fall Semester

  • BIOL A106 & BIOL A107 Cells and Heredity Lecture & Lab
  • CHEM A102 Introduction to Organic & Biological Chemistry
  • PSYC A100 Introduction to Psychology

Spring Semester

  • BIOL A316 & BIOL A317 Anatomy & Physiology 2 Lecture & Lab
  • BIOL A300 & BIOL A301 Microbiology Lecture & Lab
  • PSYC A230 Developmental Psychology

Detailed Pre-Nursing Program curriculum is outlined in the Bulletin under the School of Nursing section for the College of Nursing and Health.
